Digging Deeper: ”No Other gods”

Week of June 27, 2010

Background

In response to God’s prompting to intentionally and deliberately seek His face, our congregation recently spent 21 days in prayer and fasting (including three special sacred assemblies) seeking God. During this time, we sensed God pointing out pride in our lives, calling us to humble ourselves and to wait expectantly and hopefully before Him.

As we sought Him, God pointed out some strong parallels between our situation and His dealings with His children, the Israelites, in their desert experiences. God brought them into the desert to humble them. He desired relationship with his people and gave them commandments to instruct them how to live successfully in relationship with Him, and with one another. They were to obey these commandments. God also desires relationship with us and calls us to obedient living.

In response to this prompting, we are going to examine one of God’s commandments each Sunday this summer. We encourage you to dig deeper into God’s word throughout the week following each teaching. Allow God’s Word to penetrate your heart and listen for the Holy Spirit as He teaches you how to apply the commandments in your own life. This devotional guide is being provided to assist you in digging deeper.

Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.   Josh. 1:8 NIV

Scripture Reading/Meditation

Read a few passages from the list below each day this week. If at all possible, read the scripture aloud. Look at the context of the verses and ask the questions below about each passage. (You may need to read some verses before and after each listing to answer these questions.)

  • What is happening?
  • What has led to these events?
  • What decisions were made? Why?
  • What were the results of these decisions?
  • What is God saying to me through this passage?

Personal Application Questions to Ponder

  • If someone saw a full week of my life in video, could they detect through my actions and words that I serve Jehovah God and Him only? Would they indicate that I serve Him with a whole heart? If not, what would lead them to think otherwise?
  • What do I attribute power to in my life? Are my actions really consistent with my verbal response to this question? If I am honest, must I answer the first segment of this question differently?
  • Am I relying upon Jehovah God to meet my spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical needs? If not, who or what am I relying upon?
  • What is keeping me from turning away from other gods?

Suggested Prayers

  • Ask God to help you hear His voice as you read His word this week.
  • Pride blinds us to seeing the true condition of our hearts. Ask God to reveal to you where you are placing other gods before Him.
  • Ask God what steps you need to take to walk in obedience to Him. Ask Him for his help to obey. By faith, receive His grace to do this.

Scripture Memorization

  • Memorize Exodus 20:1-3 this week.
  • Review the memory verses from 21 Days of Seeking God. If these are not already learned, memorize one of these this week:
    • Jer. 29:13
    • 2 Chron. 7:14
    •  Isaiah 40:27-31
