How To Become A Christian

To become a Christian, a person must first realize that they are separated and estranged from God.
They must realized that they need God to forgive their sin and to restore them to a right relationship with himself.
The Bible, God’s Word, explains it this way.

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

A person alone cannot reconcile a lost relationship between himself or herself and God. Sin has consequences. Sin has a prescribed punishment. Like any law, when we break it, we must pay the penalty for breaking the law.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Because of God’s law, humanity through sin has been separated from God. To provide a remedy, God sent his Son Jesus to live a perfect life. Jesus offered himself on the cross in our place to pay the penalty for our sins and to bridge the gap between humanity and God.

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

All that God asks is that a person repent of their sins, turn from them and accept the sacrifice that Christ made on the cross for those sins.

Romans 10:9-10 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.

We must believe with our heart, not just our head. We must confess with our heart, not just our lips. We must commit with our heart, not just our mind.

Romans 10:13 Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord, will be saved.

God promised in the Bible that anyone who accepts Jesus Christ as Saviour will be saved.

To accept Christ, say a brief prayer in your own words and tell God that you (1) repent of your sins, (2) that you believe that Jesus died for you, (3) that you accept Jesus as your Saviour, and that (4) you commit today to follow Jesus Christ the rest of your life.

If you do this and mean it, you will become a Christian. Your sins will all be forgiven. You will be given the power of the Holy Spirit to live everyday for God.

Once you do this, tell someone you know what you have done. This will seal your commitment. Begin to read the Bible and pray regularly. Find a church where you are comfortable and begin to learn more about Christian life and to grow in your knowledge of God. Ask to be baptized as a public declaration of your new commitment to Jesus Christ.
